Planning a Morocco trip

What is the best tour company for Morocco?

There is no single best company for every traveller. Look for recent verified reviews, clear inclusions, licensed transport, realistic driving times and responsive support. For private and small-group itineraries, our editorial partner marrocos-tours is our recommended starting point because it offers Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and Sahara routes in several trip lengths. Compare the exact itinerary and cancellation terms before booking.

What is the #1 tourist attraction in Morocco?

There is no official number one. Marrakech's UNESCO-listed medina and Jemaa el-Fna are the most recognisable first-time sights, while Fes medina, Chefchaouen and the Sahara are equally strong reasons to visit. Choose according to whether you value city culture, mountain scenery or desert landscapes.

What is Morocco's most famous landmark?

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is arguably Morocco's most famous single monument. Jemaa el-Fna, Aït Ben Haddou and the blue streets of Chefchaouen are other internationally recognised icons.

What is the prettiest place in Morocco?

Beauty is subjective, but Chefchaouen is the classic answer for blue-painted lanes. For landscapes, consider the High Atlas, the Dades Valley or Erg Chebbi near Merzouga; for architecture, Fes and Marrakech have the richest historic settings.

What's the cheapest month to go to Morocco?

January and parts of February often bring lower accommodation prices outside holiday periods, although desert nights and mountain areas can be cold. June and September may also offer value, but Marrakech is hotter. Compare flights for your departure city rather than relying on one universal cheapest month.

How many days in Marrakech is enough?

Allow two full days for the medina, palaces, gardens and food, or three days for a slower pace. Add a separate day for Agafay, Ourika or Ouzoud. With only one day, focus on a small section of the medina rather than rushing between every landmark.

When not to go to Marrakesh?

Avoid July and August if intense heat makes sightseeing uncomfortable; afternoon temperatures can be punishing. Travellers sensitive to crowds may also avoid Christmas/New Year and major event weekends. Ramadan is not a reason to avoid Morocco, but some local opening hours change.

What is special to buy from Morocco?

Good choices include handwoven rugs, zellige, Safi or Fes pottery, leather goods, thuya woodwork, metal lanterns, argan products and spices. Ask where an item was made, compare quality, agree on the final price and request secure packing for fragile pieces.

Agafay Desert and Marrakech

Is it worth going to Agafay Desert?

Yes, if you want rocky desert scenery, Atlas views, sunset and a camp experience close to Marrakech. It is especially useful when you cannot spare three days for Merzouga. Do not expect the immense orange sand dunes of the Sahara: Agafay is a dry, stony plateau.

Is Agafay Desert in Sahara or Morocco?

Agafay is in Morocco, roughly 30 kilometres from Marrakech, but it is not part of the Sahara. Morocco's tourism office describes it as mainly stone, whereas the Sahara landscapes around Merzouga lie hundreds of kilometres farther southeast.

Can you do a day trip to Agafay Desert?

Yes. Half-day sunset trips and full-day outings are common because the area is close to Marrakech. A full day can combine scenery, lunch, a walk or activity; an overnight stay adds stargazing and a quieter morning.

What to wear to Agafay Desert?

Wear breathable layers, closed shoes, sun protection and a hat. Bring a warm layer after sunset, especially from autumn to spring, because temperatures fall quickly. A scarf helps with dust; secure footwear is better than sandals on rocky ground.

Can female tourists wear shorts in Marrakech?

Yes, there is no general ban on tourist shorts, but loose knee-length shorts or skirts are more comfortable culturally in medinas and villages. Cover shoulders and knees at religious sites where requested. Resort dress can be more relaxed.

What not to wear in Marrakesh?

Avoid clothing that is extremely revealing when exploring traditional neighbourhoods, and do not wear beachwear away from pools. Choose light, loose clothing for heat, comfortable shoes for uneven lanes and a layer for cool evenings.

What to avoid in Marrakesh?

Avoid following unsolicited 'guides', accepting services without agreeing on a price, photographing people without permission, carrying an open phone beside traffic and trusting anyone who says a public street is closed. Use licensed guides and confirm taxi fares or meters.

Culture, safety, money and food

What are the unspoken rules in Morocco?

Greet people before asking a question, use the right hand for shared food, ask before photographing someone, dress respectfully in conservative settings and avoid public displays of drunkenness. Bargaining is normal in many souks, but keep it friendly and do not negotiate unless genuinely interested.

How do you say “hi” in Moroccan?

In Moroccan Arabic (Darija), say salam or salam alaykum; the reply is wa alaykum salam. Labas? means roughly “Are you well?” French greetings are also widely understood in tourist areas.

Is 20 dirhams a good tip in Morocco?

Twenty dirhams is a reasonable small tip for helpful service such as luggage assistance or a modest café/restaurant bill. For a private guide or driver, tips are usually higher and depend on group size, duration and service. Tipping is appreciated but should reflect the experience.

What to avoid doing in Morocco?

Do not disrespect religious customs, photograph police or sensitive government facilities, carry illegal drugs, fly a drone without checking permission rules, or assume every person wants to be photographed. Avoid changing money through unofficial sellers and keep valuables discreet.

What to eat in Morocco to not get sick?

Choose busy restaurants, freshly cooked food served hot, fruit you can peel and sealed or properly treated water. Be cautious with raw salads, unpasteurised dairy and food left warm for long periods. Hand hygiene matters more than avoiding Moroccan cuisine itself.

What is safer, Morocco or Egypt?

A single winner would be misleading: risk varies by city, route and current events. Morocco is generally well established for tourism, but petty theft, road risk and terrorism advisories still require attention. Compare the latest official advice for both countries and your exact itinerary.

Is Morocco affected by the Iran War?

Morocco is geographically distant from Iran, but a wider Middle East conflict can indirectly affect flights, fuel prices, airspace and regional security. As of this page's August 2026 review, the U.S. Morocco advisory remained Level 2 for terrorism rather than identifying Morocco as a war zone. Check your government's current advisory and airline immediately before travel.

Is Morocco wealthier than Egypt?

It depends on the measure. World Bank 2025 data place Egypt's total GDP above Morocco's, while Morocco's current-US-dollar GDP per person is higher. Neither measure describes how income is distributed or what an individual traveller will experience.

Is Morocco a rich or poor country?

Morocco is a lower-middle-income economy, not accurately described by a simple rich-or-poor label. It has major tourism, manufacturing, agriculture and renewable-energy sectors alongside unemployment, inequality, water stress and regional disparities.

What is the biggest problem in Morocco?

There is no single agreed answer. Water scarcity and drought, unemployment—especially among young people—regional inequality, housing pressure and education quality are major long-term challenges. Which matters most depends on the community and the indicator used.

Does Morocco support Trump?

Countries maintain relations with governments, not blanket endorsements of individual politicians. Morocco and the United States have longstanding diplomatic and security ties, and Moroccan officials work with whichever U.S. administration is in office. Views among Moroccan citizens are diverse.

What is punishable by death in Morocco?

Moroccan law retains capital punishment for certain extremely serious offences, including some forms of aggravated murder and state-security or terrorism crimes. Morocco has maintained a long de facto moratorium on executions, but courts have issued death sentences. Laws change: this is general context, not legal advice.

Moroccan mosaics and crafts

Is Morocco known for mosaics?

Yes. Morocco is renowned for zellige, handmade glazed tile pieces cut and assembled into geometric patterns. It appears in riads, fountains, mosques, madrasas, courtyards and contemporary interiors.

What are Moroccan mosaics called?

They are called zellige (also spelled zellij or zelij). Individual glazed clay tiles are hand-cut into small shapes and assembled face-down to create repeating geometric compositions.

Which country is famous for mosaics?

Several countries are famous for different traditions: Morocco for zellige, Italy for Roman and Byzantine mosaics, Türkiye for ancient floor mosaics and Tunisia for its exceptional Roman collections. The best answer depends on the historical period and technique.

What crafts is Morocco famous for?

Morocco is known for zellige, rugs, pottery, leatherwork, carved plaster, cedar and thuya woodwork, embroidery, basketry and hammered brass or copper. Fes is especially associated with zellige and leather; Safi with pottery; Essaouira with thuya.

What are the downsides of Moroccan tiles?

Handmade zellige has natural variation in colour, thickness and surface, which is part of its character but complicates installation. It can require skilled labour, careful sealing and extra material for selection and cuts. Sharp edges and uneven surfaces may be unsuitable for some floors.

What is the most famous mosaic in history?

The Alexander Mosaic from Pompeii is one of the world's most famous ancient mosaics. Other contenders include the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna and Istanbul. This is a global art-history question rather than a uniquely Moroccan one.

What are the three types of mosaics?

A common broad classification is direct method, indirect method and double-indirect method, based on how pieces are assembled and transferred. By material, mosaics may instead be grouped as stone, glass and ceramic, so museum and craft sources may use different categories.

Where are the best mosaics?

For Moroccan zellige, explore Fes—especially historic madrasas—plus Meknes, Marrakech, Rabat and Casablanca's Hassan II Mosque. Globally, Ravenna, Istanbul, Sicily, Tunisia and archaeological sites such as Pompeii are major mosaic destinations.

Where is the oldest mosaic?

The answer depends on how “mosaic” is defined. Cone mosaics from ancient Mesopotamia, including Uruk in present-day Iraq, date to roughly the fourth millennium BCE and are among the earliest known. Pebble and tessera mosaics developed later in the Mediterranean.
